In the midst of the deadly famine of the early 1930s in the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR), a lone gravedigger is given a dangerous mission: deliver a critical letter to a distant city in a desperate bid to save lives. Haunted by hunger and the weight of death, his journey becomes even more perilous when he encounters a mysterious stranger who offers to show him a path.
